Replay

This week (Week 8) we have been writing about a video called replay. I enjoyed writing about this story because it is a bit different because it is a diary entry.

Here is my story, I hope you like it:

Tuesday, September 12, 5015
Dear Diary,
Hi Mr Diary, It’s me, Theo. My sister, Lana just got back with a torch for me. She had a tape recording for us to sell, it was a recording of children playing. I tried to get it of Lana but she just said go to bed. The next morning I got up early, careful not to wake Lana, I reached up to get the tape recording. I found the  gas mask that fitted me. My heart pounded as I stepped out into the dusty streets.

I walked the mile long walk to the small village and entered some big gates that led to a small school courtyard. I sat down on a rusty merry-go round kind of thing. Turning the tape on, I placed it next to me and spun around. Suddenly I hear two people playing with a paper jet. I imagine them throwing the jet and running to retrieve it. I really want to play with them.

I pluck up the courage to remove my goggles and face mask. I removed them slowly and fell to the ground, dreaming that my leg had grown back and the two people had come to life.

When I woke up (three hours later) I saw that the tape had snapped. I said to Lana that I would never ever go anywhere without her.

WALT: Add fractions together using multiplication.

WALT: Add fractions together using multiplication.

Hi guys, this past week my maths group has been learning about adding fractions using multiplication. At first it was a bit hard for me, but I got used to it quickly. I have made a DLO for you so you can understand it as well.

I hope you enjoy my video and learn from it!

Memory Keys

This week we have been writing a story about a man and his piano. Here is a link to the video we watched for inspiration: Piano Video.

I hope you enjoy it:

Slow, depressing music flowed around me as my fingers flew across the piano key. My heart melted as all my memories came flooding into my head. Tears welled in my eyes as I remembered my beautiful wife, Annie, playing this piano the year before last with me. I remembered, her, kissing me on the cheek. That was before she was killed in a car crash a year later, obviously.

Another memory came shooting into my mind. It was about when I was in the war. Me and my friend, Conner Ripe, were preparing to jump out behind a wall and start attacking. When Connor jumped out he got shot in the chest. That was another very sad day for me.

I saw my little grandchild, Tom, playing with something that had once been mine. That brought back another memory, It was my tenth birthday and my mother had just given me her gift. My father handed his gift to me, it was long and thin with a blue ribbon tied around it. I opened it with building tension. It was a little horse with a wheel at the end. I had hopped on it at once. That was years before I had handed it down to Tom.

My piano brung back lots of memories, happy and sad…

School Production

This week (week 6) we are doing a school production. It happened on Wednesday the 30th and Thursday 31st of August. Our topic was NZ Music Month. We had a whole bunch of songs to choose from. The song I danced to was Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn. Here is a Link to the song. The other nine songs are: I See Red, Chains, Six Months In A Leaky Boat,  Sway, How BizzareWe Don't Know How Lucky We Are, Outlook For ThursdayGutter Black and Why Does Love Do This To Me.

Does Love Do This To Me was the finale song that the whole class (Ako Ngatahi) sang/danced to.

Before the show we had to make props and practise loads.

I felt nervous and scared. My song was the fourth song onstage. I felt very proud of myself when I danced because I used big moves. When we sang Why Does Love Do This To Me I had so much fun but I was glad when it was over!

It was fun but tiring.

Somalia

We had to write a narrative through the eyes of one of the crew, or robots or the pirates by

  • Describing the setting in detail.Think about words to describe the situation, what you see, smell, taste, hear. Try to use words that create the mood.
  • Now…..Write a first person narrative through the eyes of one of the crew or one of the robots. How you are feeling when the boat is invaded by pirates.

This is my story. I hope you like it! Enjoy!!!!

Somalia
I can taste the salty sea air and smell the salty water. I can hear the talk of the ship's crew and the waves slapping against the the ship, I see the shining blue water, foamy waves and two tiny boats in the distance. The air is warm and the wind is smooth. Perfect.

Wait! Let me examine those boats. They are coming straight  towards us! Oh no. What if they’re... Pirates? Oh no no no they’re coming closer! Yeah, they’re pirates all right. CLUNK! Huh? What is that? CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK! Oh no. I think they are coming aboard the ship! Oh noooooo. I look out and see them running everywhere with guns in their hands.

Suddenly there is pirates ambushing the control room. One comes up to me and asks me “Do you know who I am?” and then says “I’m the new captain!” he takes my hat a key. I am forced to watch him turn the key. Then I realise that is the key that releases our robots!
The robots emerge from their shipping containers, frightening the pirates into a run. One robot sticks out his foot and a pirate trips over it! The robots are all carrying pirates. One robot is rolling a pirate on the ground. Another frightens a pirate into the sea! Three robots come into the control room and pull away the pirates.

I am given back my hat and my key and as the robots get back into their shipping containers I tell my crew “Keep safe!”

The First Man On The Moon...

I have been learning to summarize and retell the main ideas and important information from what I have read, in my own words.
Welcome to my DLO about The First Man On The Moon.
For reading we learnt about the moon and I chose to do a DLO on the first man on the moon. I got this information from here and we read a legend (The Story of Rona) We also read Night Light by David Hill. I have also put an animation in this slide.

Enjoy!!!!!

Cultural Performance.

On Wednesday the 12th of April Ako Nagtahi did a show for all our Mum's and Dad's. It was about Cultural Dances. The Year 5 girls and boys did the Samoan Sasa. The Sasa is about everyday life and is done by everyone. and the Year 6 and 4 girls did the Ti Rakau and the Year 6 and 4 boys did the Maori Super Haka.

When we did the Sasa I felt very nervous but when we had finished I felt proud of myself.

Tricky Maths Tricks!

This is my Maths DLO (Digital Learning Object). We had to do some pretty tricky maths (in my opinion). It might be a bit long but please watch it. I learnt how to do this by this video. To see it, click  here! :)  Enjoy my video!

:)

Super Park not Spencer Park

W.A.L.T Write an information report that informs the audience.

Success Criteria
I know I will be successful when….
  • I use an opening statement that explains the subject of the report.
  • The opening statement is followed by sentences that describe the event; what you saw, what you did, how you felt, what you learnt.
  • Each paragraph focuses on a different aspect of the topic; travelling, the beach, the lagoon walk, playground.
  • A general statement about the topic usually rounds off the report.

On Friday the 10th of March Ako Ngatahi, Ruma Toru and Wahi Ako went to Spencer Park.I was in group 3. On the bus ride I sat by my friend Risha. We talked about how exciting it was and now nervous we were. The bus ride seemed to be very short.

Then we hopped out we got into our groups. Once we were in them the teachers that were in charge of the group had roll call. Then we had a pep talk in our groups, we also got put into smaller groups, the number on my hand was made into 3D My mini group called ourselves the Golden Rose’s (it was all girls). First we went to play at the playground. I climbed to the top of the big climbing frame.  and saw the wetlands, but I was scared to go down. In the end I managed to get myself down calmly ( I was still happy to be on the ground again). Then group 3 had to leave the playground to start our day. We went to the bird look out and when group 3D was called to go up the bird lookout we had to climbed some pretty steep steps. When we got up the top of the lookout I saw lot’s of spider webs. The spider webs looked like teacups. When I first saw the spider web’s I thought they were flowers!

Once we got down from the bird lookout group 3 had a little snack. Then we got up and went to the horse trail where there was kinda like a lookout for to look at the horse trail. When we went in there was some stands to stand on to see the horse’s. We saw a horse that was pooping. Then we sat down and had some morning tea.

For lunch I ate my sandwiches, my cookies, my yogurt and my bar. Then we went back to the playground for a little play in the playground. This time I went on the swing and not the climbing frame!

Then group 3 went to the beach and we had to collect some shells for the art we were doing. I found a big piece of glass, some driftwood and even found halve a bicycle light!

Then we went back onto the bus and I sat by Risha. I sat by the window this time. I was so tired that I nearly fell asleep. Risha and I mainly chatted.

I had so much fun at Spencer park I think it should be called Super Park not Spencer Park!

Kaikora Needs You!

Hi guys! At reading time I have been studying the Kaikoura earthquake! I did my work on a powtoon. Powtoons are kind of like animated slide shows. They make objects fly around and stuff like that. I hope you enjoy my powtoon. Please comment if you like it. Bye!

Subtracting in parts

In math I have been making a video about using partitioning to subtract. Note: this is the first video I have ever made. I hope you enjoy my video. Please comment if I have gotten anything wrong or you just want to comment.

The Golden Lab

W.A.L.T:  Write a narrative

Success Criteria
I know I will be successful when….

  • The title is suitable for the text.
  • The orientation tells who the story is about, and when and where the story happened.
  • The complication describes a problem and explains what happened next.
  • The resolution explains how the problem was solved.
  • Seeks feedback and makes changes to texts to improve clarity and meaning.

In Ako Ngatahi we had to write a narrative about a video. It was about a boy opening a present that was a dog with three legs. Here is the video of the present. I hope you enjoy my story.

The Present
The Golden Lab

Today I was playing on the Xbox when Mum came in with a box. I looked at the box and wondered what was in there. I thought it was the lego set I wanted until Mum said “Go and play with the present I got you.” I opened up the box and there was a cute little puppy, he had a layer of yellow fur, big, brown eyes and a velvet black nose.Take it out, take it out!” The voice inside my head said. I saw it had three legs. “That's disgusting”, said the voice inside my head. “Arghh, get lost.” I said throwing it on the floor.

The puppy saw a red ball that was under the cupboard and ran to fetch it. He bumped his head on the door then crawled under to get it. Oh, how cute.  He brought the ball back to me and I kicked it. He ran after it and I carried on with my game, thinking I like this puppy because he is cute and clumsy.

He dropped the ball to scratch his ear, the ball rolled to me and grabbed my crutches, picked up the ball. I hobbled to the front door.  I shouted “Mum, we will be outside.” We went out and started to play fetch. As we played I was thinking of a name for him, Teddy, Charlie, Toby, I finally settled on Teddy. It was pretty cool having a friend like myself. After all, I am missing half a leg too.

Learning Goals

This term we made a slide to show our learning goals. We got to decorate the front page however we liked. We then had to copy (ctrl - c) and paste (ctrl - v) our learning goals into the slide. We had to have a meeting with our parents (or Mum or Dad.)
I'm going to try my best to achieve my goals.

Cyber Smart DLO

On Thursday a man called John Parsons came to Hornby High to go talk to us about being Cyber Smart. He told us 'A boy asked his sister if he could put a picture of her online, but she said  "Thank you for asking but no thanks."  He still put it online.' Here is a DLO on some things that you shouldn't put online.  I now feel more confidant online.
